Students will be expected to have General Knowledge provided by the biomedical disciplines studied during the previous years.
Lectures, practical exercises in small groups (tests, exercises , PBL , bibliographic research )
At the end of the course the student will be able to demonstrate: knowledge of the mechanisms of transmission and prevention of communicable diseases, and of the role of laboratory in infection control; knowledge of secondary prevention, knowledge of aspects of environmental health.
EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PREVENTION OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE
The infection chain.
Principles of sanitation , disinfection and sterilization . Hand hygiene.
Sexually transmitted diseases.
The risks associated with the procedures of piercing and tattoos.
EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PREVENTION OF HEALTHCARE ASSOCIATED INFECTIONS (HAI)
Transmission based precautions.
Role of the Laboratory in the control of HAI
ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH
Liquid and solid waste , medical waste .
Air pollution and health.
Indoor air quality.
Water and health.
EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PREVENTION OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
Diagnostic tests: sensitivity and specificity.
Oncologic screenings.
Risk factors of non-communicable disease. Health education.
Final verification by 2 modes:
1 . Individual, written by multiple choice quizzes .
2 . As a group , review of literature and presentation of results.
