Prerequisites

Students will be expected to have General Knowledge provided by the biomedical disciplines studied during the previous years.



Development of the course

Lectures, practical exercises in small groups (tests, exercises , PBL , bibliographic research ).



Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will be able to demonstrate: knowledge of the general concept of health and its determinants, knowledge of the epidemiologic studies’ methodology and interpretation of results ; knowledge of the mechanisms of transmission and prevention of communicable diseases, knowledge of the risk factors and prevention strategies for non-communicable diseases; knowledge of HTA reports’ results interpretation.



Program

HEALTH PROMOTION AND BACKGROUND OF EPIDEMIOLOGY
Concept of health and its determinants.
Health information systems.
Principles and strategies for health promotion
Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention.
Epidemiological methodology : measures of frequency (prevalence and incidence) measures of association (relative risk and odds ratio), statistical significance, standardization of rates: direct and indirect standardization.
Objectives of epidemiology and main types of epidemiological studies, descriptive and analytical epidemiology, experimental studies .
PubMed: the search engine for scientific literature in biomedical area .
Systematic reviews and meta-analyzes.
Evidence-based prevention. Clinical guidelines design and implementation.
Diagnostic tests: sensitivity and specificity.

Oncologic screenings.
EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PREVENTION OF DISEASES
The infection chain. The role of biofilm in healthcare epidemiology.
Transmission based precautions.
Principles of sanitation , disinfection and sterilization . Hand hygiene.
Active and passive immunization .
Control measures, isolation and biological risk for health professionals .
Epidemiology and prevention of specific infectious diseases of public health interest (AIDS, influenza, tuberculosis, hepatitis B and C virus, HPV lesions, legionellosis) .
Sexually transmitted diseases.
The risks associated with the procedures of piercing and tattoos.
Epidemiology and prevention of non-communicable diseases
ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH
Liquid and solid waste , medical waste .
HEALTH TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT

Principles and utilization.


 



Development of the examination

Final verification by 2 modes:
1 . Individual, written by multiple choice quizzes .
2 . As a group , review of literature and presentation of results.
