DESCRIPTION : the course aims to provide basic knowledge in research methodology and develop specialized
skills to integrate research findings into clinical decision making
Teaching method: lecturers and practical experiences
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To describe historical background and development of Evidence-Based Practice, sources of nursing knowledge
and different approaches to research.
To describe epidemiological studies design and analyze main differences between primary and secondary
research.
To develop practical skills in online research (PubMed).
To deepen main phases of study protocol.

1. Introduction of nursing research: historical background and development of Evidence Based Practice
h Nursing research: definition, principles, aims and application area
h Historical background of Evidence Based Practice: biomedical sources
h Phases in the research process
h Sources of nursing knowledge and hierarchy of evidence
h Nursing research: qualitative vs quantitative research
2. Epidemiological studies: the basics
h Many approaches to research: differences between observational and experimental studies
h Observational studies’ classification: descriptive, cross-sectional, case-control and cohort studies
h Experimental studies: clinical trial (fundamental)
h Secondary research: literature review and guidelines (fundamental)
3. Clinical decision making: research question and online networks
h Research question: background vs foreground
h The PICO(M) method
h Searching evidence: main online databases
h Finding the research for evidence-based practice: PubMed
4. Study protocol:
h Phases of nursing research: study protocol’ s main components
h Methods and instrument of data collection
