Prerequisites

Although no strict prerequisites are required, given the multidisciplinary nature of this course, it is advisable for the students to be familiar with the basic concepts of Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, applied and basic Biochemistry.

Learning outcomes

the aim of this course is to provide the proper scientific support and methodology  to understand and execute routine analysis in a Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory, specific for a student of Biomedical Laboratory Techniques. Importantly, such knowledge will include the tools to understand the complexity of a biological sample treatment, possible source of errors and put in place proper countermeasures.

Program

laboratory variability. Analytical variability (pre-analitycal, analytical and post-analytical). Biological variability (self- and extra-individual). Scientific notation and metric prefixes. Introduction to Clinical Chemistry: buffer preparation. Techniques of Nucleic acid quantitation. Electronic spreadsheet to set up and use a calibration curve. Spectrophotometric and colorimetric techniques for protein quantification. Centrifugation: basic principles and applications. Ultracentrifugation: basic principles and applications. Quali-quantitative evaluation of sieric proteins. Basics of clinical enzymology. Enzyme as diagnostic biomarkers.

Development of the examination

written and/or oral exam. Detailed directions will be provided during the course lessons.

Recommended reading
