The course aims to provide theoretical knowledge and sociological analysis tools that enable students to acquire basic knowledge and critical thinking skills in relation to the characteristics and major changes in the Italian labour market, in the context of contemporary socio-economic processes. After explaining concepts, methods and key indicators used to study the structure of the labour market, in the first part, the course will explore the relationships between welfare, family and labour market and the forms of employment in Italy (with attention to its geographical differences) with a comparative European perspective. Among others, will be discussed and analyzed the following topics: labour market participation of women, unemployment patterns, income protection schemes for the unemployed, the role of education in the labour market, employment policies, workforce composition and professional qualification.
In the second part, the course will offer an analysis of both patterns of work organization and work-related cultures and values, highlighting their main developments in recent years. A specific focus will be directed to the characteristics and dynamics of employment and career in the Italian healthcare sector, with emphasis on safety in the workplace and prevention policies for workers.
