Contents are organized based on three general aspects which enclose specific topics consisting of introduction, illustration and practice of some structural and/or lexical aspects of the language through specific sources of information ( journal articles, medical documents, scientific publications and papers) in order to develop particular learning strategies regarding reading comprehension skills and basic oral interaction.
The course aims basically at developing reading comprehension skills regarding specific sources of information such as journal articles and medical documents in general as well as the basic ability to interact taking into account how important communication between patients and medical staff is.
1. Critical Reading strategies: Skimming, scanning, surveying a text, etc.)
Types of medical Texts: *Medical documents (case notes, medical records, discharge summaries,
prescriptions, physical examination reports, referral letters, test results)
*Popular Texts (guidebooks, newspaper/magazine articles)
*Professional texts (Textbooks, handbooks, Biomedical & Scientific Journals :
editorials, research articles/papers, commentaries, reviews,
etc.)
2. Vocabulary acquisition: (mind maps, diagrams, charts, deduction, inference, etc.)
Medical Abbreviations.
Building up medical vocabulary: Word Parts: (suffixes, prefixes, word roots).
Human Body parts and systems: particular disorders and diseases: descriptions and treatments (skin, respiratory system, digestive system, skeletal system)
Types of clinical research: *Randomised controlled trials
* Non-randomised controlled trials
* Case studies
* Case-series studies
* Cohort studies
* Case-control studies
* Cross-sectional studies
Health Care Staff and Institutions.
3. Language structure
Types of texts (descriptive, narrative, etc.)
Grammar categories in context (nouns, verbs, adjectives, verbs, prepositions) & sentence structure
Hedging and modality in scientific English.
Active Vs Passive forms in scientific language.
Nominal groups.
There will be a written exam at the end of the course. Students will be asked to read a scientific text belonging to their particular field of interest and answer several content questions in order to assess their reading comprehension skills. In addition, they will be asked to perform different kinds of activities (completing, matching, etc.) to evaluate their abilities in identifying and understanding medical terminology.
