Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia - Guida degli insegnamenti (Syllabus)
The student at the end of the course must have acquired adequate knowledge of the basic methodologies of Medical Statistics in order to
- know how to organize and analyze data related to biomedical phenomena including the use of statistical software;
- able to read and interpret the results of statistical analyzes in the medical literature;
- be able to perform simple data processing and obtain a correct interpretation of the results of clinical trials.
Descriptive statistics. Summary of data and their representation by means of tables and frequency distributions. Graphical representation of data.
Elements of probability theory. Meaning of event and probability. Fundamental principles of probability theory. The Bayes’ theorem and its applications in biomedical field. Random variables and their trasformations. The binomial variable. The role of the normal distribution in statistics.
Inferential statistics. Population, sample and sampling distributions. Estimation of population parameters: point and interval estimations. Properties of estimators. Confidence interval for the mean of a population. Confidence interval for the variance of a population. Confidence interval for the difference between two means. Confidence interval for the difference between proportions. Contingency tables. Principles of simple linear regression.
All topics were used to analyze the database, even with the aid of the statistical program R.
