The student must know the evolution of childbirth as an event bio-psycho-social and emotional of the woman life and of the baby, couple and family life; the process of midwife care of the normal delivery.
Physiology of childbirth: introduction of basic concepts. Birth as a social event: from culture of medicalization of childbirth towards humanization of birth.
Delivery as biological event: factors affecting labor (birth canal; fetus; expulsive-power). Mechanics of labor and delivery (dynamic, mechanical and plastic phenomena). Stages of spontaneous vertex delivery (first stage or cervical effacement and dilatation stage; second stage or expulsion stage; third stage or placental stage).
Midwifery care intrapartum: receiving and taking charge of the pregnant woman. Midwifery diagnosis, diagnosis of active labor. Physical and emotional changes of woman in labor; emotional processing during childbirth; women’s freedom of choice. Biological rhythms and physiological timing of labor; monitoring of maternal and fetal well-being during labor. Pain and its functions; non-pharmacologic approaches to management of labor pain.
Midwifery care during vaginal birth: delivery assistance manoeuvres during the second and the third stage of labor. Episiotomy (techniques and indications). Alternative delivery modes. Cord blood collection.
Midwifery care in post-partum period: clinical observation and local examination of the mother. Mother-Baby dyad. Early breastfeeding.
Care in normal birth: guideline.
Caesarean section: guideline.
Labor unit and delivery suite: structure, materials, instruments, human resources, IPD, characteristics and structural requirements.
Midwifery and nursing care during pre-intra-post operative period in woman undergoing caesarean section.
Management of delivery assessment tools: partograph, protocols assistance, birth certificate laws (birth certificate, registers of births, time limit of birth registration).
Written and/or oral examination.
