Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia - Guida degli insegnamenti (Syllabus)
General knowledge about Physics and Chemistry
At the end of the course the student should:
1. Knowing how to express the result of a measure and understand the errors which could affect it
2. Understand the operating principles and main automated methods of measurement implemented in the most common equipment of a biomedical laboratory
General principles on the measurement: units and measurement standards, measurement methods, expression of results, errors in measurement, the concept of uncertainty, significant digits; direct and indirect measures.
Electrical signals: the concept of voltage, intensity of electrical current, electrical resistance, measurement of voltage and current. Brief introduction to electric shock protection systems in the workplace: the magnetothermic and differential switches.
Analog to digital conversion and vice versa. Concepts of quantization, sampling and loss of
information.
The transducers: sensitivity, resolution, linearity, saturation, bandwidth, offset, slew rate.
Temperature sensors: thermometers, thermocouples, thermistors. How to measure high temperatures: pyrometers.
Force and pressure sensors. Doppler effect in flow sensors. Light intensity Sensor: photoresistors, photodiodes and photomultipliers.
Detectors of ionizing radiation: ionization chamber, proportional counter and Geiger-Muller, scintillators and photomultipliers.
Outline of Peltier devices and their use in PCR devices.
Spectrophotometry: basic law, lamps, monochromators, detectors. Turbidimetry. Spectrofluorimetry. Flow cytometry and cell sorting.
Note:
The following devices will be shown to students in the classroom: temperature sensors, sensors of light intensity (photodiodes and a photomultiplier), diffraction grating monochromator. Moreover, students will have the possibility of using a Peltier cell, a Geiger-Muller counter for alpha particles and one counter for beta and gamma radiations, a Geiger-Muller tube for measurement of radiation emitted from liquids.
