Development of the course
The course aims at providing the appropriate knowledge in the basic virology of viral families of medical interest and the necessary tools for the detection and diagnosis of the etiological agents of major infectious diseases of viral origin.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student is expected to have acquired a basic knowledge on the characteristics of the families and genera of viruses involved in human infections, the basic principles for their diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
Program
Basic virology: viral structure and replication. Virus host interaction: innate and adaptive immunity. Main viral families involved in human pathology: herpesviridae, papillomaviridae, adenoviridae, hepadnaviridae, poxviridae, flaviviridae, retroviridae, orthomyxoviridae, picornaviridae, paramyxoviridae. Pathogenesis and the main pathologies associated to viral infections. Antiviral compounds and mechanisms of resistance.
