Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology and statistics.

Development of the course

The purpose of the course is to provide students with the basic concepts related to: microorganisms (viruses, bacteria and fungi) and their role as pathogens to humans; promotion of oral health, epidemiology and prevention of major infectious diseases of the oral cavity. The course is based on lectures with slides presentation.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student should know what the microrganisms are, the routes of transmission and the mechanisms of virulence of major human pathogens, the mechanisms of action and mechanisms of resistance of antimicrobial agents. Must also know the main microorganisms of the oral cavity, the mechanisms of formation of dental plaque and microbial agents responsible for dental caries and periodontal diseases. Finally, the course objectives relate to the promotion of oral health, in particular the thorough knowledge of infectious agents transmitted by air and / or blood, including those that could cause public health problems in relation to the biological risk of transmission.
