Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of biochemistry, physics, physiology, biology and statistics.



Development of the course

The purpose of the course is to provide students with the fundamental concepts regarding microorganisms (viruses, bacteria and fungi) and their role as pathogens to humans; the professional competence in relation to disease prevention and health promotion, the basic knowledge of general pathology.

The course is based on lectures with slides presentation..



Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student should know what the microorganisms are, the routes of transmission and the mechanisms of virulence of major human pathogens, the mechanisms of action and resistance of antimicrobial agents. Moreover, the student should gain knowledge about disease prevention and health promotion, the epidemiological basis of the analysis of phenomena, and health care services organization. the aetiology of human diseases, the biology and pathology of the immune system.



Program

Introduction to Microbiology; Bacteriology, bacterial cell, mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis, antibacterial agents; Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Salmonella and Enterobacteriaceae; Mycology , clinically important fungal infections; Virology, viral classification, structure, replication and pathogenesis; viruses responsible for respiratory infections (Rhinovirus and Enterovirus; Adenovirus; Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Parainfluenza Viruses, Metapneumovirus; Influenza viruses; Coronaviruses); viruses responsible for exanthematous and skin infections (Rubella Virus; Measles Virus; Parvovirus B19; Herpes Simplex Viruses, Varicella-Zoster Virus, Human Herpes 6, Cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr Virus and Kaposi Sarcoma Virus; Enteroviruses associated with rush, mucosal and skin lesions; Human Papillomaviruses; Smallpox and Molluscum Contagiosum Viruses); Hepatitis Viruses (Hepatitis A Virus;Hepatitis B Virus; Hepatitis D Virus; Hepatitis C Virus; Hepatitis E virus); Retroviruses and Human Immunodeficiency Virus.



Development of the examination

Written test (descriptive answers to questions or multiple choice questions)
