Program

Need for safety: the safety of the patient: the factors influencing the safety of the patience, verification of

safety; environmental safety: physical, chemical and biological factors; management of special waste in hospital facilities

and at home. Sanitization, disinfection, sterilization. Structure of hospital stay unit and patients unit, microclimate

control. Safety of workers: accidents in the home, hospital and working environments: epidemiology and prevention, the

nurse’s professional risks (physical, chemical, biological, burn out, load handling). Hospital infections: definition, control

and surveillance system, hand washing.

The functions of skin and skin adnexa: verification of the conditions of the skin and the patient’s hygiene; need for

hygiene and self-care: the factors influencing it. The care and hygiene of the patient (washing in bed, partial care, perineal

care, mouth care etc.), trichotomy. Care of a person with diaphoresis. Need for getting dressed: verification of the

factors influencing dressing; how to help the dependent patient get dressed. Need for movement: factors influencing it;

positioning and alignment of the body; walking aids, patient handling and transfer. Prevention of complications in

bedridden patients, therapeutic postures. Skin injuries (bed sores and vascular ulcers): prevention, use of scales for risk

verification and evaluation, treatment.

Need for rest and sleep: the factors influencing sleep at home and in the hospital; verification of the sleep and rest

pattern. Major sleep disorders, measures to favour sleep. Need for diversion: the patient’s day and time in the hospital.

Vital functions: analyzing the factors influencing central and peripheral oxygenation, the importance of checking

circulation of the blood and heart activity. Pulse evaluation, measurement of blood pressure and heart rate; positioning

of the person with circulation disorders. Factors influencing body temperature, body temperature measurement, care of

a patient with fever and hypothermia.

Factors influencing respiration, evaluation of the respiratory function, observation of breathing.

Positioning of the patient with respiratory problems. Teaching the patient deep breathing and coughing exercises.

Managing the care of the patient during oxygen and aerosol therapy. Diet: evaluation of nutritional needs and eating

habits: influencing factors. Assisting non self-sufficient patients with their meals. Meaning of diet: hyposodic, hypolipidic,

hypoglucidic, hypoproteic; enteral feeding through gastrostomy and nasogastric tube, calculating the hydroelectrolytic

balance. Passage: verification of passage and the factors influencing it; use of rectal tube and evacuation or medicinal

enemas. Intestinal ostomies (notes). Urine elimination, evaluation of urinary function, assistance to the patient with

urinary incontinence, assistance to the patient with retention of urine, urine collection and monitoring of diuresis. Esame

chimico-fisico delle urine, uninocoltura, esame urine con stick. Urinary deviations (notes). Assisting the patient with a

urinary catheter. Performing temporary and permanent urinary bladder catheterization. Heat and cold application.
