Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of  general and organic chemistry.

Development of the course

The aim of the course is to allow the students to acquire a basic knowledge of biochemistry and biology, in order to understand the fundamental processes occurring in the cell.



Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will understand the structure and function of biological macromolecules and the molecular mechanisms of biological phenomena and their regulation.
The student will also be aware of cell morphology, the mechanisms responsible for the flow of genetic information, and the fundamental principles of heredity.


Program

Biomolecules

Carbohydrates (classification, chemical and physical properties of monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides; the glycosidic bond).

Amino acids and proteins (amino acid structures, essential amino acids, the peptide bond, protein structure and function).

Enzymes (introduction to enzymes, mechanisms of enzyme catalysis, classification and substrate specificity, coenzymes, chemical and enzyme kinetics,  regulation of enzyme activity, enzyme activity measurement).

Lipids and biological membranes (triacylglycerols, phospholipids, sphingolipids, cholesterol, fat-soluble vitamins and structure of biological membranes).

Nucleotides and nucleic acids (chemical structure of nucleotides, nomenclature, chemical structure of DNA, structures and different types of RNA).

 

 Metabolism

Glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle.

Oxidative phosphorylation.

Introduction to  bioenergetics.

Amino acid catabolism and the urea cycle.

Beta-oxidation of fatty acids and synthesis of ketone bodies.

Transcription and RNA processing. Reverse transcriptase.

Translation (the genetic code, ribosome structure, steps in protein biosynthesis).

 

Chemistry:

Solutions and concentration. Percent composition, mole fraction, molarity, molality, normality.

Chemical equivalent and equivalent weight.



Development of the examination
Oral exam on the course subjects.
