Main classes of organic compounds. Reactivity of functional groups. The chemical equilibrium. The solutions. Acids and bases, pH and buffer systems. Bioenergetics and biological oxidations. The structure and metabolism of molecules of biomedical interest. Biochemical aspects the food digestion. Carbohydrates: glucose, fructose, sucrose, starch, cellulose. Glycogen metabolism. Gluconeogenesis. Control of blood glucose. Glycolysis. Fermentations. Krebs cycle. Oxidative phosphorylation. Proteins: the plasma proteins (myoglobin, hemoglobin and oxygen transport), enzymes and coenzymes. Vitamins. Metabolic patwais for ammonia, urea, uric acid and bile pigments. Lipids: Fatty Acids, Phospholipids, cholesterol, and lipoprotein transport. Lipolysis, ketogenesis, lipogenesis, cholesterol synthesis. Significance of the principal blood parameters : glucose, cholesterol, GOT and GPT.
